SEATTLE (March 5, 2018) Garvey Schubert Barer today announced that Akane Suzuki has been elected to the International Academy of Estate and Trust Law, a global organization of attorneys, judges, professors and other leading law professionals dedicated to analyzing the requirements and tax consequences of wealth transfers between individuals, corporations, trusts, foundations, estates and family businesses around the globe.
Membership in the Academy is highly selective, with only one-quarter of one percent of lawyers, judges and professors in each member nation qualifying. Suzuki is one of only 100 members from the United States, and one of only four in the state of Washington.

As a Principal in Garvey Schubert Barer’s Seattle office, Suzuki focuses on sophisticated estate planning and probate/trust administration, including international estate planning. Her thoughtful, strategic approach to estate planning as a means to achieve her clients’ priorities, such as caring for loved ones or ensuring a family business continues to the next generation, has made her a trusted advisor to business owners, executives, young entrepreneurs, retirees, and beneficiaries of dynasty trusts.
Suzuki has extensive experience nationally and internationally in cross-border estate planning. She is a native Japanese speaker and has large networks in Japan and the United States that help her navigate the legal systems and customs of both countries on behalf of clients around the world. She co-edited a high-ranking Japanese-language book on cross-border estate planning and speaks regularly on international estate law and other related topics.
In addition to her membership in the Academy, Suzuki is also a Fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel, where she serves on the International Estate Planning Committee. She is also a co-founder of the Seattle branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP), and a past committee member of the Estate Planning Council of Seattle and of the Washington State Bar Association’s Real Property, Probate and Trust Section.
Suzuki received her law degree from the University of Washington School of Law, her LL.M. in Taxation from the New York University School of Law and her undergraduate degree in East Asian Studies from Lewis & Clark College.
